Twilight is a weird time of day. Its fascinating and wonderful. There is something mystical about sitting and watching the light slowly dim to an almost half lit grey and then finally, darkness. Its almost as wondrous as the early morning when dawn breaks and the darkness gives way to light. For an hour this evening that's all I did. I stood behind the counter, looking out the windows watching the light fade, slowly shifting from light to dark. Since it's just me in the shop I have no one to talk to, only customers and since they are so very far and few between today; I've slowly but surely been losing my mind. Wandering from one side of the shop to the other. Fully intending to do something but unable to remember moments later. Going to the spa section to restock lotions and washes, only to find them fully stocked. Moving to the scarves and hats to organize only to realize I did that an hour ago and no one has been into mess them up. Staring off into nowhere. Watching the same icicle lights outside move in the wind for the last five minutes, but unable to bring myself back and not stare at them for another five minutes. Eyes glazing, my mind has turned to mush, completely useless. The English language is like some kind of chicken scratch gibberish. Does "lamby" have a "b?" I DON'T KNOW. My frontal and temporal lobes are clearly not functioning.
The phone rings, my mind snaps to working order and I pick up the receiver hoping for a confused and difficult customer so I can really actually work. Nope it's the front desk letting me know room 506 is cash only, no room charges tonight for them. Not that anyone is coming in to purchase anything with any means of payment. I can't take it I look at the clock its 7:02. Sweep and Vacuum the entire store. It's 7:17. The moments where time moves SO slow are the same ones I feel I'm throwing away. Wasting them. Never able to get this time back. Accomplishing nothing. Wishing desperately there was something, anything to do.
