There
are a few monumental purchases an individual makes in their life, not the least
of which being; their first car or any and all homes they buy. I bought a car,
I bought a car. It's mine all mine. The beautifully old and a little
beat up little 83 Honda I have been driving for the last two or so years
started its life as my Aunts car, then it moved to her brother, then to my
sister and finally to me. Though I love the car dearly, thirty years and
268,000 miles were just a little too much for its cylinders to survive. So I
bought a car. It’s a monumental purchase, unbelievably terrifying and nerve wracking.
I still don’t know if I made the right decision and am kind of terrified every
time a turn the key in the ignition that something terrible is going to happen
and I’ll be screwed all over again.
| My new, old car |
After
hours of sifting through car ads on Craigslist I found the diamond in the
rough; a 1986 (yes still older than me) Honda Civic with 68,400 miles on it. It
was owned by a little old lady in a pretty bad neighborhood of Seattle. At
ninety-two she was finally giving up driving. For the past twenty-seven years
all she’d done was drive to the store or her hair dresser both of which were
within a five mile radius of her home and once or so a month her son would come
and drive the car on the highway for her to burn off the carbon on the engine. Having
driven a manual transmission my whole life a carbureted engine with an
automatic transmission is a little something different to get used to, but I
love it. This is my first monumental
purchase of my life and like all big life altering decisions I’m a little scared
but very much looking forward to the adventure.
