bringing in a new year

A new year starts tomorrow which brings the end to this one. I've never been one for new years resolutions, deciding one day to change the way you live your life just never seems to work.  Life is ripe with opportunity and obstacles, and one can't decide one day, even if it is the first day of a new year, that they are going to seize every opportunity and avoid every obstacle. Things just don't work that way.

There is something sadly introspective about the new year. Although Robert Burns wrote Auld Lang Syne as a celebratory toast to the future and reminder not to forget the past in the process. Though it is a toast to the occasion, it is still heartrendingly sad as well. It reminds us that though the New Year is a celebration, many friendships may have been lost over the course of the last 365 days be it drifting apart, death or distance. Its a toast but a sad one.

So here I go to toast the coming New Year, to venture into the celebratory aura of the night with parties and festivities, with a thought to the new friendships I enter the year with and the old ones that have since been lost.
