Composting

The world can't support the amount of waste we as a global community produce. Everyone needs to take a more active role in reducing their landfill waste. This means reusing, recycling, and composting. The espresso bar part of my work is in desperate need of change. The coffee shop recycles and reuses as much as sanity and health code allows, as in metal steaming pitchers, spoons and utensils used for pouring and mixing drinks. However even with three or four trips to the out door recycling bin with recyclable waste the amount of landfill waste put into the dumpster at night is upsetting. Especially when most all of the items placed in the garbage can are in fact compost able.

The coffee grounds and filters are compost able. The used cups both paper and plastic are compost able  our hot beverage paper cups do not have a wax internal lining and our plastic cups and lids are a corn complex based plastic not a petroleum based plastic, so they too are biodegradable. Waste reduction is an important part of every global citizens duty to the planet, environment and future generations. When I see a large portion of our coffee shops waste being compost able but still put into landfills since the options for proper disposal aren't conveniently available, it is exceptionally disappointing.
