The modern generation of new voters in America aren't the bright future our predecessors hoped we would be. Where personal and political decisions are made based on tweets and Facebook updates. Is that really what this country needs? It isn't political endorsements by former Presidents, vice presidents, United State Senators or Representatives, it's not endorsements by Governors, Ambassadors, labor unions or former cabinet officers that my generation looks at. It's only the endorsements by celebrity chefs, fashion designers, musicians, entertainers and athletes that the new wave of Americans care about.
It isn't what Nobel Prize Laureates in Economics say. We as a generating don't know the names of Michael Spence, Joseph Stiglitz, or Paul Krugman, we don't know what kinds of contributions they've made to the Economic Sciences, and most don't care. Yet everyone born between 1985 and 1995 knows who "Brangelina" is and what their children are doing. How can I blame my peers, when it is the society in which we've grown up in and live in. Its supply and demand, granted the demand is controlled by mass media, and we all buy right into it. We all are however, free individuals with the freedom to read, and be interested in what ever we so choose. Yet it is a sad statement on our generation and the future of this country let alone the global community that "Brangelina" has over twice as many Google results as Peter Agre, David Hubel, Roy Glauber, Roger Tsien, and Martin Chalfie combined.
I only hope that when they say "the meek shall inherit the Earth," that they really mean the nerds, geeks, book worms, and brainiacs shall inherit the Earth. I only hope we as a country can pull ourselves together long enough to turn off the "reality" TV shows, close the tabloids and make a few informed intelligent decisions, based on our knowledge, intelligence and morals not those of the biggest new star in Hollywood. We aren't the right future for America, but we're all she's got.
