Playing, laughing, collaborating and conspiring are necessary elements for any game fest. Playing together opens up the lines of communication. Be it monopoly or mancala, Texas hold'em or taboo, scattergories or stratego, pictionary or pinochle, battleship or backgammon, games are an ice breaker and a way to open a dialog among people.
At least for my family when we all get together every other week for dinner and games it's always a night of good food, good company and good laughs. We're all very opinionated and we all think we're always right which makes arguing over the actual definition of "harem" so much more amusing than it probably should be. Especially since it has absolutely nothing to do with the game we're actually playing.
Games are a joining point, regardless of whatever conflicts, disagreements or tensions between individuals before and after the game they are forgotten for the thirty seconds the timer ticks away, they are completely ignored for the period of the hand being played. Playing games together enrich relationships, forges stories to be told and retold for ages to come and teaches everyone around the table something new. Be it the definition of "harem" or at least what the number one and number two definitions might be. Playing none digital/video games opens communication among participants. Playing is communicating.
